Does The Racing Industry Believe This Is Believable?

The term “independent inquiry”, to me, means an inquiry conducted by a panel of non-industry individuals with expertise in areas of concern.  In this case, welfare and abuse.

Definition of “independent” (in·de·pend·ent  [in-di-pen-duhnt]  adjective)
  1. not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc.; thinking or acting for oneself: an independent thinker.
  2. not subject to another's authority or jurisdiction; autonomous; free: an independent businessman.
  3. not influenced by the thought or action of others: independent research.
  4. not dependent; not depending or contingent upon something else for existence, operation, etc.
  5. not relying on another or others for aid or support.
The Greyhound Protection League of New Zealand (GPLNZ) collected over 1,500 signatures, for the government, to request an independent inquiry into the racing industry over claims of cruelty and unexplained deaths of racing greyhounds.

That “independent” inquiry ended up comprised by a "panel" of racing industry individuals questioning of the racing industry itself.

Huh?  When I monitor myself, hell, I'm pretty lenient...

It is the same in the US where someone selected to a Department of Racing post to oversee the racing industry welfare and is very intimate with, and interested in the success of, the racing industry.

And it is same all other countries where racing is not banned.

While this is my opinion, I cannot believe someone who is very closely tied to an industry that has such disregard for welfare can be objective and openly report welfare issues.  They have more to lose by being honest.

That, in my world, does not fit the definition of independent.

And the verdict is typically the same – on an internal inquiry.
my note: they’d probably sell their grandmas if they got a decent price.
  • “We love our dogs.”
  • We care about their welfare.”
  • “We give them the best – fill in the blank – food, care, surroundings…
  • Perhaps the most laughable was former TGP GM comparing that rat track kennels to the Taj Mahal.
The “independent” racing industry report is laughable if it weren’t so heartbreaking for all of the greyhounds who have perished and continue to perish.

And I think the best summarization of this came from GREY2K USA

“To summarize this bizarre review, there are no problems, except there are lots of problems, but there really are no problems, and finally there is a "clear need" to fix the problems that the industry does not have.”

Apparently the “independent” inquiry report was written by a drunken pushme-pullyou…  Damn those wine margaritas....

Get serious with these inquiries and get truly independent individuals involved.  That will give a true and honest report.  And only that.

Shame on all those who created this farce of a report.

Is this the Nancy Weller with connections to Grey2K. The Nancy Weller whose dog was in the 2012 Grey2K calendar?

If so there is certainly an agenda to your article.

Dick Ciampa,

Trying to understand your comment “…with connections to…”. Quite vague.

Are there shared viewpoints, sure but not all.

Is because a calendar had a picture of one of my dogs? Fine. My pups have been in several calendars over the years and are submitted to many other calendar opportunities. It comes with thinking my dogs are damn special and I welcome the opportunity to share this love I have.

Is it because I found the summation of this ridiculous inquiry hilarious? So be it. I did. It is about as inane as the US DOJ performing an “independent” inquiry into the US DOJ. Completely ludicrous and no way independent is the point I was making.

This blog contains my personal thoughts and experiences. Of those I’ve lost, of the things I love and my commentaries on things I find outrageous.

You appear to take issue with my blog. It is a post of mine on a personal blog, not an “article”.

Easy solution. Don’t read it.

Is this the Dick Ciampa who has made a career online of slandering all greyhound welfare activists with lies and smears? Talk about an "agenda"!

@ Dick Ciampa,

I suppose I also have "connections" to Grey2KUSA, since my dog has also been in their calendar. I suppose this means that you will think I have an "agenda" too. You bet your butt that I do!! Then again, you must be good at "betting", right? An "industry" that makes a living over the pain and suffering of sweet greyhounds, and when the shit hits the fan, they have to examine the issue and then they have some of their minions conducting the said inquiry... THAT is laughable... Sorry, scratch that idea: WOULD BE laughable if our precious dogs had not suffered through it and if thousands of others who continue to live and die in abject conditions so that YOU can have fun betting and pouring ridicule over the efforts of a few good souls who want to stop this "industry" .
If you don't like this blog, mister, STAY AWAY! That is all that you have to do!

I agree with what Nancy said and I don't even have a greyhound. It sounds like you're the one with an agenda Mr. Ciampa.

I'm a little confused, how can you compare a Greyhound being in a calendar to the barbaric sport of Greyhound racing? Surely to be in a calendar only involves a photograph being taken by a loved one or even a professional where as forcing them to race by starving them, beating them, leaving them in nasty cold unhygienic places with no love, warmth or a sofa until they are needed then either killing them or abandoning them because you are 'done' with them because they don't make you money any more!

I have an agenda - to stop the travelling circus/animals-as-entertainment industry that is greyhound racing. Throughout history those with agendas to prevent harm, cruelty, abuse and exploitation have helped create many, many socially vital changes -and the treatment of animals is an on-going issue millions throughout the world are concerned with. Having an agenda is not a terrible thing. This review of the NZ Greyhound Racing industry highlights many of the problems the Greyhound Protection League of NZ has claimed - bar the doping of dogs. It is a review the industry undertook when the GPL petition went to the Parliamentary Select Committee for consideration. The industry, with their agenda to keep exploiting and harming these dogs, wanted to get in first and do an in-house review. Nevertheless, they have highlighted many problems. We are still awaiting the NZ Government's response to our request that a TRUE independent review is conducted.

Anon - I remember both of those links. In fact, I see my comments on that second one.

Lynn, I am following what transpires in NZ on this. I applaud all of your efforts!
